San Pedro Cactus, A Narcissist, and the Hot Pocket of Life

Life as I knew it imploded on June 18, 2019, when my husband of fifteen years suddenly discarded me and speed-morphed into another version of himself that is a mind-bending, cluster-f*ck of crazy. In his convoluted Alice in Wonderland thinking, it was time to release the Kraken and let the beast roam free. His sister aptly described it as letting the lion out of his cage. His personality disorder compelled him to have a single-minded, myopic view of his wants and needs, so much in fact, that anything or anyone who stood in his way would be summarily disposed of. He longed for new flesh, new and expanded consciousness, and new sources of fuel for his ego.

The thing about people with a narcissistic personality disorder is that they are chameleons with no true self. They absorb the habits, mannerisms, speech, interests, and pretty much everything about the person they are with. Beneath that facade, that false persona, lives something else entirely. I think this thing, this shriveled soul, was just watching and learning and pretending and then when it had depleted all of my resources like a swarm of locusts, it was gone in 60 seconds without a second thought or backward glance.
