Will coupling with another break the spell? Consider it physical therapy much akin to the other therapies designed to facilitate healing, closure, and moving on. I have never thought it should be casual or simply recreational, but I’ve certainly engaged with men I no longer loved or even respected or liked for that matter out of convenience or loneliness.

I would never make a habit of engaging in such soulless behavior. It is cheap and vulgar not to mention risky in today’s disease-ridden culture. But maybe the first time with someone new should happen outside of emotion simply to mark the passage and get it done. To stop the longing and indulgence in hard-wired memories of the man you gave your heart to. The one who laughed and handed it back to you. . . only after tearing it to shreds. How could anything you try to do now to forget him be any more heartbreaking or humiliating than what he has already done to you?
